Norwood-Hamilton Scale (Male Pattern)


The term "male pattern" stems from the work of the first individuals to develop an alopecia scale. The first was Dr. James Hamilton, who created the initial scale, featuring a classification system of up to eight grades.

Dr. Norwood developed a scale of up to 7 grades, simplifying the initial scale.

The hair is in a normal state. There may be minimal recession in the frontotemporal area. Hair loss at this stage is typical.

The most affected area is the frontotemporal region, with a recession of 2 cm. At this stage, hair begins to fall out, and there is a decrease in density at the front.

At this stage, we can speak of actual baldness; it presents with hair loss at the crown and the characteristic receding hairline at the temples, where hair is sparse or entirely absent.

Here we see an advanced stage of balding, where the crown area and the receding hairline connect.

At this stage, it is very common for the bridge connecting the two sides of the head to be incomplete. The areas affected by baldness are the frontal region and the crown, which is progressively widening.

At this stage, there is a complete disappearance of the bridge separating the areas most affected by baldness.

We are at the final stage of the scale, and hair is present only on the upper part of the ears and the back of the head.

Ludwig Scale (Female Pattern)

 

The Ludwig Scale, or Female Pattern, was developed by Dr. Ludwig. Unlike the male pattern, this scale is divided into only three grades, with two additional grades appearing only in very rare cases.

At this stage, the balding is classified as mild, and its presence is barely noticeable along the central hairline.
